A Month of Forgotten Olympic Heroes

Mengele’s love letter to Eva written on his special piece of “Fuhrer stationery.”

Hans Muller Carvalho
Mexico City, 1960
300M Rifle, Gold Medal

Eva Carvalho was living in the slums of Sao Paolo in 1947 when she was approached by a dapper man with the hint of a German accent.  Though she was not a prostitute, when he offered her the princely sum of 100,000 cruzeiros to make love to him on seven consecutive nights, she could not refuse.  And after their seventh night of passionate lovemaking Eva Carvalho had unwittingly fallen deeply in love with Josef Mengele.

Mengele though had no interest in human passions.  Known as the Nazi Angel of Death, Mengele was specifically attempting to figure out if he could synthesize sperm from the greatest Nazi marksman Hans Mueller, inject it into his own testicles, and impregnate the women of Brazil with the type of shooters he would need if he were to attempt to invade America from the south.  But he had not thought his plan all the way through: by making love to these women himself, he was creating a human connection.  One that would not be easily broken.

After Mengele left Carvalho with a note asking her to name any child she might have had by his hand, “Hans,” Eva decided she would follow her beloved “Josie” wherever he went.  He headed south to Curitiba, and she was at his hotel room mere hours after his arrival.  He headed north to the site where the city of Brasilia was soon to break ground, and she was already there, wearing a hardhat, professing her love.  It is said that Mengele would venture deep into the Amazon, attempting to escape her love, but at every turn she would reappear.

Eventually, near the homestead of the Potiguara tribe in northern Brazil, Mengele would confess everything. “I’m Josef Menegele, angel of death.  I turned the Jews’ eyes blue.  I killed more men than anyone ever.  I can evade the Americans, the Soviets, even the fucking French, but I can’t lose one woman who is full with Hans’ child!”  Eva, unaware of the specific implications of the holocaust, was even more deeply in love with this super powerful warlord of Europe.  And he was so impressed with her tracking skills that he decided that the child inside of her was worth sacrificing his greater plans for.

Mengele and Eva travelled back to Sao Paolo with Carvalho, and he took her as his wife.  Hans was born, and they began raising him.  Josef had put a rifle in Hans’ hands at the age of 3, and he was the top Brazilian marksman by 5.  His plan had worked, but perhaps a little too well.  Allied bounty hunters caught wind of his presence in Sao Paolo, and he was forced to leave Eva for a second time.  He left her another note, “my love, I have left you once, and you have found me.  You must not seek me again.  The forces that drag me away from you are no longer of my mind’s creation, but of the world’s.  Be safe, keep Hans safe, and I will see you in heaven, Josie Mengele.”  When she found it, she felt that the note was wet with his tears.

Alone and wealthy, Eva bough up a farm 100 KM north of Sao Paolo, and built her Hans the greatest shooting range the world had ever seen.  Hans trained daily with a former Brazilian Paramilitary fighter named Ricardo Gomes.  HIs hybridized German-Brazilian technique was flawless.  The Brazilian Olympic Committee named him to their shooting team at the age of 12, and he went off to Mexico City where he brought home the gold in the 300 meter rifle event.

After becoming the youngest gold medalist in modern Olympic history, he received the following note at the Olympic Village: “Dear Hans, I am so proud of you.  Your namesake, Hans Mueller once killed three hundred Russians in a day outside of Stalingrad.  But we would lose that battle, and that war.  You my boy, you’ve already won.  I wish to free you from the burden of your father, and your father.  You are not Hans and you are not Josie.  You are you, and I love you, Papa Josie.  PS: have many children as your genetic stock is most impeccable.”  Heeding his father’s advice, Hans would dedicate the rest of his life to having unprotected sex all over Brazil.  He would die in 1979 of a particularly severe herpes outbreak, having sired over 400 children.
